Here's How Often You Should REALLY Wash Your Jeans

February 28, 2017

If you're anything like me, your jeans are probably one of the most well-loved items in your closet. My black Madewell skinnies are my absolute go-to's and I wear them at least twice per week. So when it comes to caring for our denim, how often should we actually wash our jeans?

According to Business Insider, you should wash your jeans when they start to smell, which can depend on factors like how much you sweat, how often you wear said pair of jeans, etc. They suggest using the smell test as your determinate for how often you need to wash.

Most good quality jeans stretch and have good enough extension where it's no longer necessary to wash them to get them to shrink back up again. That's why you don't need to wash them every time you wear them. Because a lot of laundry detergents have optical brighteners that will change the color of your jeans very quickly, we recommend that you be conservative with washing.

Tips for Making Your Denim Last:

  1. Don’t use bleach—any time bleach touches indigo it gets lighter.

  2. Wash them inside out, in cold water and with a mild detergent to preserve the color.

  3. You can also tumble them in the dryer with a dryer sheet to release odors.

  4. You can hang your jeans outside on a hanger and mist with Febreze to release odors.

  5. Don’t wash your jeans too often. The less frequently they touch water, the longer the color will last.
